Help prevent violence in Osun election, Davido appeals to Trump
Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has appealed to United States President Donald Trump to pay attention to the forthcoming Osun State governorship election, expressing concern over possible violence and disruption of the electoral process.
Davido made the appeal in a post on X on Tuesday, urging the United States and the international community to monitor the election and encourage Nigerian authorities to protect voters and ensure that their votes are respected.
“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election.
“There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process,” Davido wrote.
The singer urged the relevant authorities to ensure that residents of the state could exercise their constitutional right to vote freely and without fear.
“Osun people deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear,” he said.
Davido also called on the international community to pay close attention to the election, scheduled for August 15, 2026.
“I appeal to the United States and the international community to pay close attention to the election and encourage all relevant authorities to ensure that every voter is protected and every vote is respected,” he wrote.
He stressed that his priority was to prevent violence and ensure a credible electoral process.
“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election,” Davido said.
The latest appeal follows an earlier warning by the singer that he would seek Trump’s intervention if anything went wrong during the Osun election. Davido made the remark during a live session with comedian Carter Efe, saying he would involve the US president if the electoral process was compromised.
Davido, who is a nephew of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, has openly supported his uncle’s re-election bid and has repeatedly called for a peaceful election.
He had earlier urged political actors and residents of Osun State to reject violence, intimidation and provocation ahead of the poll, stressing that the choice of voters must be respected.
The August 15 governorship election is expected to feature Adeleke and other candidates, including the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, and the African Democratic Congress candidate, Najeem Salaam.
Davido’s latest intervention comes amid growing calls for a peaceful and credible election as political activities intensify ahead of the poll.
