NMDPRA Launches Real Time Fuel Tracking App to Monitor Consumption Across Nigeria
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has launched a real time fuel tracking application designed to monitor fuel consumption patterns across retail outlets nationwide, in a major step towards improving transparency, accountability and regulatory oversight in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.
The authority said the pilot phase of the initiative commenced on August 1, 2026, in Abuja and the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory, marking the beginning of a technology-driven approach to monitoring fuel distribution and consumption across the country.
To assess the readiness of the digital platform, the Executive Director for Distribution Systems, Storage and Retailing Infrastructure (DSSRI), Mr. Ogbugo Ukoha, led a team of officials from the Abuja Regional Office on an inspection tour of participating filling stations where the application is currently being deployed.
According to the NMDPRA, the mobile application captures fuel inventory and compliance data in real time, enabling regulators to monitor product movement more effectively, improve operational efficiency and strengthen compliance with industry regulations.

The regulator explained that the digital platform will generate reliable, data driven insights that will support evidence based policy formulation, enhance national energy security planning and improve transparency in the downstream petroleum industry.
It added that the initiative would provide significant value to government agencies, investors, petroleum marketers and other stakeholders by ensuring timely access to accurate fuel consumption, inventory and compliance data needed for informed decision making.
The NMDPRA noted that the deployment of the application forms part of its broader commitment to leveraging technology to modernise petroleum sector regulation, improve service delivery and enhance confidence in Nigeria’s fuel supply chain.
Industry observers believe the initiative could also help strengthen regulatory compliance, reduce irregularities in fuel distribution and provide authorities with more reliable information for monitoring product availability across different parts of the country.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability and operational efficiency in the downstream petroleum sector, expressing optimism that the nationwide rollout of the application will support a more efficient and data driven fuel distribution system.
