US Embassy Rejects AI-Edited Passport Photos, Warns Nigerians Against Editing to Remove Tribal Marks, Using Beauty Filters

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has warned Nigerians applying for U.S. visas and other travel documents against submitting passport photographs that have been altered with artificial intelligence (AI), beauty filters or other digital editing tools, stressing that such images will be rejected.

In a reminder posted on its official X account on Friday, the U.S. Mission said passport photographs must be genuine, recent and accurately reflect an applicant’s current appearance. It warned that applicants should not digitally alter their facial features, including using AI, beauty filters or photo editing software to remove tribal marks, blemishes, scars or other permanent identifying features.

“Reminder! Do NOT use AI or digital editing tools on your passport photo. We will not accept photos that are edited or filtered,” the mission stated.

The embassy explained that passport photographs must have been taken within the last six months and should closely resemble the applicant to enable easy identification by U.S. border and immigration officials.

“Your photo should be recent (taken within the past six months) and look like you (the TSA or CBP agent must be able to tell it’s you),” the statement added.

The mission cautioned that digitally enhanced photographs, including those modified to improve facial appearance or conceal permanent features, could significantly delay the processing of applications because they do not meet the required identification standards.

“Submitting a digitally enhanced photo will significantly delay your application,” the embassy warned.

It advised applicants to follow the U.S. Department of State’s passport photo guidelines and ensure that all photographs submitted are recent, unedited and accurately represent their natural appearance to avoid delays or rejection of their applications.
