FG Revives Digital Postcode Project, Begins Integration with NIN
The Federal Government has revived Nigeria’s long-delayed National Digital Postcode Project, nearly 20 years after it was conceived, and has commenced its integration with the National Identification Number (NIN) to strengthen digital identity, improve address verification and enhance public service delivery nationwide.
The initiative followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) in Abuja on Friday. The agreement formalises NIPOST’s integration into NIMC’s digital identity ecosystem and is expected to expand access to identity services, improve identity verification and support the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, disclosed that both agencies had already integrated postcode retrieval into the NIN platform, enabling Nigerians to verify their addresses and retrieve their digital postcodes through a single trusted platform.
“Our teams have collaborated to integrate postcode retrieval into the NIN platform, so that Nigerians will soon be able to confirm their address and retrieve their postcode through one trusted platform. This is designed to make access faster and more convenient for all Nigerians,” she said.
Coker-Odusote explained that while the National Identification Number establishes an individual’s identity, the National Postcode System provides a reliable location, adding that combining both systems would create a solid foundation for inclusive governance and digital transformation.
According to her, linking the national identity database with the country’s postcode infrastructure will improve access to government services, financial products, healthcare, education, emergency response, logistics, e-commerce and other essential services, while also strengthening planning, transparency and effective policy implementation.
She also announced that NIPOST had been licensed as a front-end enrolment partner for NIMC, allowing Nigerians to register for the National Identification Number at post offices across the country.
“The Postmaster General and I sat down a couple of months ago, and what we did was to give them an enrolment licence to make them a front-end partner. Nigerians who want to go to post offices can enrol there, and they will capture their details on our behalf,” she said.
Describing the initiative as a major milestone, the NIMC boss said the integration would create a national database of verified identities linked to verified addresses and locations, making address verification more efficient for financial institutions, government agencies and private organisations.
She further noted that the partnership would strengthen Nigeria’s digital public infrastructure by integrating identity, payments and data exchange systems, while the newly enacted NIMC Act 2026 has enhanced the commission’s legal powers to tackle identity fraud and modernise the country’s digital identity framework.
In her remarks, the Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, described the digital postcode project as a solution to Nigeria’s longstanding addressing challenges.
She explained that the system would assign every standing structure in the country a unique Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled, machine-readable location identifier, thereby improving logistics, emergency response, urban planning and access to public services.
According to Odeyemi, the project, first conceived in 2006, has now received full Federal Government funding for the first time.
“The Nigerian Postal Service has been trying this project since 2006. This is the first time that this project has been fully funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria,” she said.
She added that the renewed investment demonstrates the Federal Government’s recognition of digital identity and national addressing as critical infrastructure for economic development, financial inclusion and improved governance.
The agreement between NIMC and NIPOST is expected to accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation by creating an integrated identity and addressing system that enhances service delivery, strengthens verification processes and promotes inclusion across the country.
