Kidnapped Ex-Military Spokesman, Retired Maj. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, Dies in Bandits’ Captivity
Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information at the Defence Headquarters, has died while in the custody of bandits who abducted him in Katsina State.
The Katsina State Government confirmed the development on Saturday, describing the retired military officer’s death as a tragic loss to his family, the state, and the nation.
Abubakar’s death comes days after a video surfaced online showing him and his wife, who were both kidnapped by bandits, pleading with the government and relevant authorities to meet the kidnappers’ demands to secure their release.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, the state government disclosed that the retired General died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in bandits’ captivity,” the statement read.
“Despite the relentless and coordinated efforts of the Katsina State Government and security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation sadly ended in tragedy.”
The government noted that extensive efforts had been made by security agencies and state authorities to rescue the former military spokesman, but those efforts ultimately proved unsuccessful.
According to the statement, Abubakar’s abduction and subsequent death represent a significant loss not only to his immediate family but also to Katsina State and Nigeria as a whole.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and mourned the retired military officer’s passing, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the security challenges confronting parts of the country.
The governor said the tragedy underscored the urgent need for stronger collaboration among governments, security agencies, and communities in the fight against banditry and other violent crimes.
He added that the incident highlights the necessity for a collective and intensified response to criminal elements threatening peace, security, and development across the country.
Radda reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the abduction are tracked down and brought to justice.
The state government also assured residents that ongoing efforts to combat banditry and restore lasting peace across Katsina State would continue without relent.
It further offered prayers for the repose of the late General’s soul and strength for his family as they navigate the difficult period of mourning.
Maj. Gen. Abubakar was widely respected for his distinguished military career and service to the nation, particularly during his tenure as Director of Defence Information, where he served as the spokesperson for the Nigerian Armed Forces.
His death has sparked fresh concerns over the growing threat posed by banditry and kidnapping in parts of northern Nigeria.
