Veteran Nollywood Actor Kola Oyewo Dies at 80

Nigeria’s entertainment and cultural community has been thrown into mourning following the death of renowned actor, dramatist, filmmaker, and scholar, Kola Oyewo.

His son, Wale Oyewo, confirmed the development on Friday evening, revealing that the respected thespian passed away at the age of 80.

The late Oyewo was widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Yoruba theatre and Nigerian performing arts, with a distinguished career spanning more than six decades. His passing marks the end of an illustrious journey that left an indelible mark on Nollywood, academia, and the preservation of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Oyewo began his acting career in 1964 with the legendary Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. He subsequently rose to prominence as one of the most recognizable faces in Nigerian theatre and film.

He gained widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Odewale in the celebrated play, The Gods Are Not to Blame, written by renowned playwright Ola Rotimi. The role cemented his status as one of Africa’s leading theatre practitioners.

Beyond the stage, Oyewo featured prominently in several acclaimed productions, including Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, and the popular television series Super Story. His contributions played a significant role in the growth and development of Nigeria’s film industry.

A distinguished academic, Oyewo earned a doctorate degree in Drama from University of Ibadan. Throughout his academic career, he taught at several higher institutions, including Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, and Elizade University.

Through decades of teaching, research, and mentorship, he helped shape generations of actors, playwrights, scholars, and cultural practitioners across Nigeria and beyond.
