Facebook, Instagram Suffer Global Outage, Millions of Users Logged Out
Meta-owned social media platforms Facebook and Instagram experienced a widespread outage on Friday, leaving millions of users across the globe unable to access their accounts.
The disruption affected Facebook’s website, mobile application, and Messenger service, with numerous users reporting that they were unexpectedly logged out of their accounts.
Attempts to log back in were unsuccessful for many users, who were met with error messages stating that “an unexpected error occurred.” Visitors to Facebook’s website were also greeted with a notice indicating that the company was working to resolve the issue.
As the outage persisted, users flocked to X, formerly known as Twitter, to verify whether others were experiencing similar problems. Reports of service disruptions quickly flooded the platform from different parts of the world.
While Facebook and Instagram appeared to be the hardest hit, WhatsApp remained largely operational despite sharing some backend infrastructure with the affected platforms. However, a number of users also reported difficulties accessing Instagram’s website.
The outage appeared to be global in scope, with complaints emerging from multiple countries within a short period.
Downdetector, a website that monitors online service disruptions, recorded a sharp surge in reports related to Facebook and its associated products before the tracking platform itself experienced technical difficulties.
As of the time of filing this report, Meta had not issued an official statement explaining the cause of the outage.
The technology giant does not maintain a public status page for its consumer-facing platforms, though it operates one for business services. The status page had not been updated to reflect the widespread disruption.
The outage sparked concern among users and businesses that rely on Meta’s platforms for communication, marketing, and customer engagement, highlighting the far-reaching impact of service interruptions on the company’s vast global network.
