President Tinubu’s National Award Honoree, Femi Aborisade Leads Democracy Day Protest in Ibadan, Demands Urgent Rescue of Oriire Kidnap Victims
Today, June 12, Nigeria marks Democracy Day, a national observance celebrating the country’s democratic journey and the sacrifices made in the struggle for civilian rule over the past 27 years.
This year’s celebration, however, has been overshadowed by growing concerns over insecurity in Oyo State, as it coincides with four weeks since pupils, teachers and other victims abducted in Esiele, Orire Local Government Area, were taken captive by kidnappers.
Against this backdrop, members of the Coalition Against Insecurity, Oyo State Chapter, staged a protest in Ibadan, calling on government and security agencies to intensify efforts towards securing the release of the victims and addressing the nation’s security challenges.
Leading the protest was human rights activist and democracy advocate, Comrade Femi Aborisade, who was among those recognized by President Bola Tinubu during his Democracy Day address this morning, argued that democracy cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity, insisting that governments at all levels must prioritize the protection of lives and property.
Other protesters urged political leaders not to politicize insecurity, stressing that public office holders must take responsibility for ensuring the safety and welfare of citizens calling for urgent and decisive action to rescue the abducted victims and prevent future occurrences.
The demonstrators maintained that while Democracy Day is meant to celebrate freedom and good governance, Nigerians cannot fully enjoy the dividends of democracy as long as insecurity continues to threaten lives, livelihoods and access to education across the country.
