Democracy Day: AHOY Flagship Commends Security Efforts, Calls for Swift Rescue of Nigerians in Captivity
As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day 2026, the Association of Humble and Obedient Youths (AHOY) – Pyrates of AHOY Flagship joins millions of Nigerians in celebrating the enduring values of democracy, freedom, justice, accountability, and the rule of law.

In a statement issued on Friday, AHOY Flagship said “This important national occasion provides an opportunity not only to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey but also to assess how effectively the dividends of democracy are reaching ordinary citizens, particularly the most vulnerable members of society.”
While democracy guarantees rights and freedoms, its true essence lies in the ability of the state to protect lives, secure communities, and create an environment where citizens can pursue their aspirations without fear.
It is against this backdrop that we draw attention to the plight of children and other innocent citizens who remain victims of abduction and insecurity across different parts of the country.

“We commend the Federal Government, security agencies, local authorities, and all stakeholders involved in the successful rescue and release of some abducted persons in Borno State.”
Their safe return to their families demonstrates that when intelligence gathering, inter-agency cooperation, and strategic security operations are effectively coordinated, meaningful results can be achieved.
The emotional reunions witnessed following the release of these victims have renewed hope among many families still waiting for the return of their loved ones.

The Association recognizes the sacrifices made daily by members of the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, intelligence agencies, local vigilante groups, and other security personnel who continue to put their lives on the line in defense of the nation.
Their courage, resilience, and dedication deserve commendation, particularly in the face of evolving security threats and challenging operational environments.
However, while we celebrate these successes, we must also acknowledge that many families across the country continue to live with uncertainty, pain, and anguish as their loved ones remain in captivity.

The rescue of some victims should not diminish the urgency of securing the freedom of those who are yet to regain their liberty.
“We therefore call on the government and relevant authorities to intensify efforts toward the rescue of all remaining abductees, particularly the schoolchildren and other victims still being held captive in Ogbomoso and other affected communities across Nigeria.”

Every day a child spends in captivity is a day stolen from his or her education, development, and future. Beyond the immediate trauma experienced by victims, abductions inflict deep psychological and emotional wounds on families and communities.
Parents are left in constant fear and uncertainty, while entire communities become gripped by anxiety and insecurity.

The long-term consequences of these incidents extend beyond individual families, affecting social cohesion, educational outcomes, and public confidence in the ability of institutions to guarantee safety.
As advocates for youth development, education, and social justice, we believe that every Nigerian child deserves the opportunity to learn in a secure environment.
Schools should remain centres of learning, hope, and opportunity, not places associated with fear, violence, or uncertainty.
The growing threat to educational institutions in some parts of the country poses a serious challenge to national development and requires a sustained and coordinated response from all levels of government.
Democracy cannot thrive where citizens live in fear. The strength of a democratic society is measured not merely by the conduct of elections or the existence of democratic institutions, but by the extent to which it protects the rights, dignity, and security of its people.

“When a child is unable to attend school because of insecurity, democracy is weakened. When families are forced to live in fear because their loved ones are missing, democracy falls short of its promise. When communities are abandoned to insecurity, the principles of justice and equality are undermined.”

We therefore urge the government and relevant stakeholders to:
- Sustain and strengthen ongoing security operations aimed at securing the immediate and unconditional release of all remaining abductees across the country.
- Improve intelligence gathering, surveillance, and rapid response mechanisms to prevent future incidents of kidnapping and abduction.
- Strengthen security architecture around schools and vulnerable communities, particularly in areas identified as high-risk zones.
- Provide support services for rescued victims and their families, including medical care, trauma counselling, and rehabilitation programmes.
- Demonstrate unwavering commitment to education by ensuring that insecurity does not deprive any Nigerian child of access to learning and personal development.
As Nigerians celebrate Democracy Day, we call on all citizens, civil society groups, community leaders, and public institutions to work collectively toward building a nation where every child is safe, every family is protected, and every community can thrive in peace.

Democracy must be more than a system of government; it must be a guarantee of safety, opportunity, and hope. It must protect every child, secure every community, and preserve the future of the nation. Until every abducted child and citizen regains freedom, our collective responsibility remains unfinished.
