Two WAEC Students, Motorcyclist Die in Rivers Road Accident

Two female students participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and a commercial motorcyclist have lost their lives in a tragic road accident in Rivers State.

The fatal crash occurred on Wednesday along the Choba Bridge axis of the East-West Road in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

According to sources, the students were returning from their examination centre when the motorcycles conveying them reportedly collided with a moving truck.

“The students were coming back from Odoha Community Secondary School in Emohua Local Government Area after writing their WAEC examinations,” a source disclosed.

“It happened today. Three people died — one commercial motorcyclist and two female WAEC candidates,” the source added.

Another source noted that the examination centre is located less than 30 minutes from Choba Bridge, where the accident occurred.

“Choba is the host community of the University of Port Harcourt,” the source said.

It was further gathered that several other persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accident. The injured victims were reportedly rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital for medical treatment.

Operatives of the Choba Divisional Police Headquarters were said to have been deployed to the scene to maintain law and order and ease traffic congestion following the incident.

A video circulating on social media showed the bodies of the deceased lying on the road after the crash, drawing widespread sympathy and concern from residents.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Rivers State Police Command nor the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had issued an official statement regarding the accident.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety and the dangers associated with commercial motorcycle transportation on major highways.
