Frequent cases of gas explosions in homes and business premises across Nigeria have continued to raise concerns over public safety, with experts attributing many incidents to negligence, faulty equipment and poor safety practices.
To this end, The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has warned that improper handling of gas cylinders and unchecked leakages remain major causes of devastating explosions capable of destroying lives and properties within seconds.
Gas explosions continue to pose serious safety risks in homes and commercial spaces across the country, with many incidents linked to poor handling, faulty equipment and low safety awareness.
Some residents of Ibadan expressed concern over the increasing cases of gas explosions across the country, describing the incidents as alarming and should be preventable.
They also shared personal experiences of gas leakages and near-explosion incidents, describing moments of panic when they detected the smell of gas in their homes or discovered faulty cylinders.
Speaking on the development, Head of Operations at the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Kayode Olarenwaju, explained the major causes of gas explosions, stressing that pressure build-up in gas cylinders can trigger sudden and devastating blasts.
He also provided important safety tips on what to do when gas leakages are detected, and further highlighted practical steps individuals and households can take to prevent gas leakages and ensure the safe handling and usage of gas cylinders.
