Oyo School Attack: Makinde Confirms 32 Abducted Pupils and Teachers, Says Not 49; Sets Up Command Centre as Rescue Efforts Intensify
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has confirmed that 32 persons were abducted during the attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of the state, as security operations intensify to secure their release.
Makinde made the confirmation while briefing the public on the incident, stressing the need for accurate figures as rescue efforts continue.
He explained that seven students were abducted from Community Secondary School, while 18 pupils and seven teachers were taken from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School in the Oriire axis. He also confirmed that one person was killed during the attack.
The governor described the situation as “serious and difficult,” noting that security agencies are actively working to rescue the abducted victims.
He said an operational command centre has been established at the Oyo State Police Headquarters, where all rescue operations are being coordinated and monitored in real time to ensure a unified and effective response.
Makinde appealed for calm and responsible reporting, urging the public and media not to sensationalize a sensitive situation involving human lives.
On security measures, the governor disclosed that two surveillance aircraft procured by the state government have arrived in Nigeria and are currently being assembled at the Nigerian Air Force hangar in Lagos.
He said the aircraft are expected to become operational before the end of June and will be deployed to monitor border areas between Oyo and Kwara States, as well as Nigeria’s international boundary with the Republic of Benin.
Makinde reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to securing the state and ensuring the safe return of all abducted victims, while urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
“If you see something, say something, and expect us to act,” he added.
