Open-Defecation: Oyo State Begins Massive Construction of Public Toilets, Set to Begin Commissioning June 5

The Oyo State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, has reiterated the state government’s commitment to eliminating open defecation while scaling up sanitation infrastructure and enforcement measures across the state.

He disclosed that the government has successfully designated a local government area within Oyo State as open defecation–free, describing it as a key achievement in the state’s ongoing environmental sanitation campaign.

To sustain the fight against environmental pollution and indiscriminate open defecation, the Ministry has deployed sanitation officers across the state to identify and report offenders.

Aderinto also noted that the government has strengthened public–private partnerships to construct public toilets in strategic open spaces.

He explained that some of the facilities will be operated free of charge by private partners under agreed arrangements.

According to him, several of the toilet projects are already at advanced stages of construction, with at least two expected to be commissioned by June 5.

He added that the initiative is part of a wider environmental health drive aimed at improving public hygiene, reducing disease risks, and ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment across Oyo State.
