From Umbrella’s Shadow to Cassava Fields: PDP, APM Supporters Raise Cassava to Heaven at Ongoing Ibadan Rally

Supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) are currently flooding Mapo Hill in Ibadan, Oyo State, raising cassava stems and tubers high into the air as symbols of what they describe as a “new political movement” ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The ongoing rally, tagged the “Unity Mega Rally Ibadan 2026,” has attracted party loyalists, youth groups, and political stakeholders from different parts of the state.

Chants, music, and coordinated displays of cassava continue to dominate the gathering, with supporters declaring a transition from the PDP’s umbrella emblem to what they call a “grassroots harvest politics.”

Many participants say the cassava represents productivity, economic revival, and a stronger connection to ordinary Nigerians, particularly farmers and rural communities. Supporters repeatedly lift the crop toward the sky in celebration, creating one of the rally’s most striking scenes.

The event is also fueling speculation over emerging opposition alliances and the growing political influence of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde amid ongoing coalition conversations ahead of the 2027 election cycle.

Organisers say the gathering is aimed at strengthening unity between PDP and APM supporters while expanding grassroots mobilisation across Oyo State.

Security personnel remain stationed around the venue as supporters continue to troop into the rally grounds.
