Oyo Environment Commissioner Cautions Livestock Rearers Against Disrupting Residents’ Livelihoods, Urges Compliance With Grazing Law
Oyo State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Dr. Ademola Aderinto, has cautioned livestock rearers against engaging in activities capable of disrupting the livelihood and daily activities of other residents, stressing that all forms of animal rearing must be carried out in line with the laws of the State.
Aderinto gave the warning during a stakeholders’ roundtable discussion organised by the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA) at the Local Government Service Commission Training Centre, Secretariat, Ibadan, as part of efforts to strengthen peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders across the State.
According to the Commissioner, whatever form of livestock rearing anyone chooses to engage in must be done in designated and restricted locations where it would not interfere with people’s lives, businesses, activities and personal property.
He noted that the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde remains committed to sustainable environmental management, agricultural development and the protection of lives and property, adding that compliance with the Oyo State Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law remains essential to maintaining peace in rural communities.
He commended the willingness of both farmers and herders in the state to embrace peaceful engagement and comply with the provisions of the law, describing the establishment of a dispute resolution committee as a step towards strengthening trust and reducing conflicts among stakeholders.
The Commissioner also praised OYRLEA for sustaining dialogue and cooperation among relevant groups, while urging all parties to remain law-abiding and support government efforts aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence and sustainable livestock management in Oyo State.
