Oyo IPAC Calls for Peaceful 2027 Elections, Warns Against Violence & Disrespect for Traditional Institutions

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Oyo State Chapter, has issued a strong advisory to political parties, aspirants, stakeholders, and the electorate ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging all actors to prioritize peace, civility, and democratic values as political activities begin to intensify across the state.

In a press statement signed by its State Chairman, Mr. Opeyemi Akinade, IPAC reaffirmed Oyo State’s long-standing identity as the “Pacesetter State,” known for intellectual political engagement and administrative excellence.

However, it warned that the state must not relapse into past episodes of political violence, referencing the infamous 1962 “Operation Wetie” crisis in southwestern Nigeria as a historical lesson against allowing political ambition to spiral into chaos.

The council emphasized that politics must remain a platform for service, sacrifice, and development not conflict or destruction.

It expressed concern over what it described as a rising level of aggressive political rhetoric and urged all parties to allow peace to prevail in their engagements.

IPAC also strongly condemned what it called increasing instances of disrespect toward elders and traditional institutions, stressing that monarchs remain custodians of cultural heritage and stabilizing forces in society.

It warned that dragging traditional rulers into political disputes undermines the values of Omoluabi and threatens social stability.

Addressing internal party tensions, the council advised aspirants who may feel dissatisfied with their party processes to avoid violence or actions capable of destabilizing the political environment. It noted that with 21 registered political parties in Oyo State, aggrieved politicians have democratic alternatives rather than resorting to internal conflict or disruptive behavior.

Reiterating its commitment to peaceful democracy, IPAC called on security agencies to remain vigilant and impartial, while urging citizens to resist being used as instruments of political violence.

“As we approach 2027, let us compete with ideas, not weapons; engage in debates, not diatribes,” the statement read, adding that Oyo State must once again set the standard for issue-based and non-violent political participation in Nigeria.

The council concluded by calling for unity, restraint, and respect for democratic values, stressing that democracy must be protected through collective responsibility.

“Let us choose service over strife, and the people over personal pride,” the statement added.

IPAC ended with prayers for continued peace in Oyo State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
