Three Cross River varsity students, staff member die in road crash
Three students and a staff member of University of Cross River State have died in a road accident along the Calabar–Itu highway.
The crash, which occurred on Friday night in Odukpani, involved a coaster bus conveying the students that collided with a truck, according to multiple reports.
Onen Ebri, the university’s public relations officer (PRO), confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday, noting that 24 students and a staff member were involved.
The victims were said to be members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), returning from an official assignment in Uyo.
The deceased have been identified as Solomon Uya, SUG director of sports; Lucky Erim, president of the Faculty of Physical Sciences Students’ Association; Favour Darlington of the department of educational management; and Anthony Arikpo, the driver of the vehicle and a staff member of the institution.
Ebri said the injured survivors are receiving treatment at various hospitals and assured that adequate care is being provided.
He added that the vice-chancellor, Francisca Bassey, and the deputy vice-chancellor (academic), Stella Maris-Okey, visited the injured students to express solidarity and ensure they receive proper medical attention.
According to the statement, the vice-chancellor reaffirmed the university’s commitment to the students’ full recovery and overall well-being.
