Rights Advocate Demands Justice, Compensation Over Ilorin Electrocution Tragedy

‎Calls for justice and compensation have intensified following a tragic electrocution incident in Dakun Community, Apata Yakuba, off Kwara Polytechnic Road, Ilorin, which claimed one life, left several residents injured and destroyed properties.

‎The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of April 7, 2026, around 5:05 a.m., and lasted for nearly two hours before power was brought under control.

‎Eyewitnesses described the scene as devastating, alleging that a high-tension electricity wire snapped and came in contact with low-tension lines supplying homes in the area, resulting in a dangerous surge of electricity across the community.

‎Among the victims was a recently passed-out corps member, Ismail Olatunbosun, who lost his life in the incident, while his sister, Yetunde, sustained serious injuries. Several residents were also said to have lost household appliances and other valuables due to the power surge.

‎Speaking with journalists, the Principal Partner of the Utilities Consumers Rights Advocacy Initiative of Nigeria, Mr. Shadrack Akinbodunse, described the tragedy as a case of negligence and called for immediate action by relevant authorities.

‎He alleged that safety mechanisms failed to respond promptly and questioned why the fault persisted for several hours without intervention.

‎Mr. Akinbodunse urged residents to remain cautious when handling electrical appliances and stressed the need for urgent compensation for affected families and the Dakun community.

‎He also called for a thorough investigation into the incident and appropriate sanctions for any officials found culpable.

‎According to neighbours of the deceased, two high-tension wires snapped and bridged low-tension lines, causing uncontrollable voltage that led to the fatality and injuries.

‎The family of the deceased is demanding justice, compensation for Ismail’s death, treatment support for Yetunde, and restitution for residents whose properties were damaged.

‎Meanwhile, Mr. Akinbodunse said petitions have been submitted to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and other relevant stakeholders, urging swift intervention.

‎Residents of the community have also been urged to remain calm and law-abiding while investigations continue.
