Delegates Ratify ADC Constitution, Elect David Mark as NWC Chair
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Tuesday concluded its national convention in Abuja, with delegates approving key amendments to the party’s constitution and ratifying a new National Working Committee (NWC) led by former Senate President, David Mark.
Emeka Ihedioha, former governor of Imo State and chairman of the electoral sub-committee, announced the outcome of the voting process. According to him, a total of 1,576 delegates were accredited, with 11 votes declared invalid.
He disclosed that 1,471 delegates voted in favour of the constitutional amendment, representing 94 percent approval.
“Distinguished delegates, by virtue of this result, it means that the constitution of the African Democratic Congress has today been duly amended by this convention,” Ihedioha said.
Earlier in the proceedings, Olumide Akpata, chairman of the legal and convention processes committee, supervised the ratification of resolutions from the party’s 97th, 98th, and 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings.
The motion for adoption of these resolutions was moved by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South.
Similarly, Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), moved the motion for the adoption of resolutions from the 100th NEC meeting held on March 25, 2026. The resolutions addressed the party’s manifesto and nationwide congresses. Both motions were adopted through a voice vote.
Chinedu Idigo, the party’s National Organising Secretary, later outlined key resolutions approved at the convention. These include a waiver of membership requirements, suspension of zoning provisions for executive offices, and suspension of rules requiring that vacant positions be filled by individuals from the same zone as their predecessors.
In his closing remarks, David Mark described the convention as one of the most successful he had attended.
“Today marks the beginning of our journey to the Villa, and all of you are part of this history,” he said.
The convention also saw disciplinary actions taken against some members.
Nafiu Bala, former National Deputy Chairman, was expelled over alleged anti-party activities. Several others were also expelled, including Leke Abejide, a member of the House of Representatives, alongside Elias Adiukeu, Kenneth Ehiator, Kingsley Temitope, Obinna Norman, Kennedy Odiong, and Stella Chukwuma.
