Heavy Gridlock in Abuja as Rainstorm Damages Bus Terminal, Pedestrian Bridge
A heavy downpour on Tuesday caused severe traffic congestion along the Nyanya–Keffi Expressway in Abuja after a rainstorm damaged parts of the Kugbo Bus Terminal and a nearby pedestrian bridge.
Eyewitness reports indicate that strong winds tore off sections of the roof of the newly constructed terminal, scattering debris onto the highway and obstructing vehicular movement.
The incident led to a major gridlock along the busy corridor linking the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to neighbouring Nasarawa State, leaving many commuters stranded for hours.
Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday.
“The windstorm damaged parts of the Kugbo Bus Terminal in Nyanya, Abuja,” he said. “It also caused minor damage to the Nyanya pedestrian bridge and some buildings in the area.”
He added that preliminary reports show no casualties or damage to vehicles.
To maintain order and restore traffic flow, the FCT Minister has directed the deployment of security personnel to the affected area. Authorities have also commenced immediate efforts to repair the damaged infrastructure.
Cleanup operations are ongoing to remove debris and ease traffic along the route.
