Oyo’s Wage Bill Rises by ₦2 Billion Monthly as Government Moves to Cushion Workers Fuel Price Shock
The Oyo State Government has announced a nearly ₦2 billion monthly increase in its wage bill following the introduction of a ₦10,000 transportation support package for workers, as part of efforts to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices.
Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, disclosed that the new measure has significantly raised the state’s financial commitment to workers’ welfare, pushing its annual salary expenditure beyond ₦142 billion, one of the highest among states in the federation.
The transport allowance, recently approved by Governor Seyi Makinde, is targeted at all categories of workers in the state.
According to Oyelade, the intervention was necessitated by the surge in global fuel prices triggered by ongoing tensions involving Iran.
The Commissioner also commended President Bola Tinubu for his recent pledge to donate his salary to families of fallen and wounded military personnel.
However, Oyelade urged the President to take further steps to alleviate the economic burden on Nigerians, including the introduction of additional palliative measures, upward salary adjustments, and policies aimed at reducing fuel prices amid the current global uncertainties.
