Eid el Fitr: Osun Government Offers Free Train Rides for Indigenes Coming Home from Lagos
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced a free train service for indigenes of Osun State as part of preparations for the Eid el Fitr celebration.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NRC spokesperson, Calistus Unyimadu said the initiative, known as the Imole Special Train, is being organised in partnership with the Osun State Government.
He explained that the train will run on the narrow gauge route from Iddo Station in Lagos to Osogbo, conveying Osun indigenes free of charge as part of the state’s Sallah programme.
According to him, the Osun State Government is fully sponsoring the service, while the NRC will provide rolling stock, technical support, and operations.
To meet increased travel demand during the festive period, the corporation also announced additional services across its major routes.
On the Lagos to Ibadan route, the Lagos Ibadan Train Service will run three trips on March 19. Departures will be from Mobolaji Johnson Station at 7:40 am, 1:40 pm, and 4:00 pm, and from Obafemi Awolowo Station at 8:00 am, 10:50 am, and 4:30 pm.
On the Abuja Kaduna rail corridor, two trips will run on March 19, while three daily trips are scheduled from March 20 to 23.
The Warri Itakpe rail line will maintain its three times weekly schedule. Trains will depart Warri on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays at 8:00 am, and Itakpe on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 12:00 pm. Thursdays remain reserved for maintenance.
Similarly, the Port Harcourt Aba rail line will continue operating its regular timetable throughout the festive period.
The NRC assured passengers of safe and reliable service and encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of rail transport during the celebrations.
Meanwhile, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar announced that the moon marking the beginning of Shawwal has not been sighted in Nigeria, indicating that Friday, March 20, will be observed as Eid el Fitr.
