Oyo Government Vaccinates 170,000 Livestock to Boost Food Security
The Oyo State Government has vaccinated over 96,000 cattle and more than 74,000 sheep and goats, bringing the total number of livestock covered to about 170,000 in its ongoing disease control efforts.
The Director-General of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA), Dr. Debo Akande, disclosed this during the flag-off of a statewide livestock vaccination campaign in Eruwa, Ibarapa area of the state.
He explained that the intervention is part of a broader strategy to improve food security and enhance the productivity of livestock farmers across the state.
According to him, the campaign, being implemented under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), will be extended to most local government areas in due course.
Dr. Akande added that the state government is also expanding access to animal healthcare through the construction of veterinary clinics across several local government areas.
He further revealed that plans are underway to establish another day-old chick market to complement the existing one serving Nigeria and neighboring West African countries.
He noted that the livestock development drive aligns with Governor Seyi Makinde’s agricultural transformation agenda, with between 200,000 and 300,000 farmers expected to benefit from the interventions.
