IGP Tunji Disu Backs State Police, Inaugurates Seven-Member Implementation Committee
Tunji Disu, the Inspector-General of Police, has inaugurated a seven-member committee to oversee the implementation of state police in Nigeria, marking a significant step in ongoing efforts to reform the country’s policing structure.
The committee, formally inaugurated on Wednesday, will be chaired by Olu Ogunsakin, a respected professor of police studies.
Other members of the panel are drawn from senior law enforcement officers, legal experts, and policy specialists with experience in security sector reform.
According to the Inspector-General, the committee has been mandated to develop a comprehensive framework to guide the establishment and operationalisation of state police across the federation.
Its responsibilities include examining constitutional provisions, identifying potential challenges, and recommending strategies to ensure accountability, professionalism, and effective coordination between federal and state policing structures.
Disu emphasised that the move aligns with broader national conversations on decentralising policing to enhance community-based security and improve rapid response to local threats.
He noted that the committee’s work would involve consultations with key stakeholders, including state governments, security agencies, civil society organisations, and traditional institutions.
The panel is expected to submit its recommendations within a stipulated timeframe, after which a policy roadmap will be developed for phased implementation.
Observers say the initiative could significantly reshape Nigeria’s security architecture if carefully executed and supported by necessary legislative amendments.
