Oyo Police Arrest Two Over Alleged Transnational Ammunition Trafficking, Recover 2,625 Cartridges
The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspected international gun runners and recovered 2,625 cartridges in Saki area of the state as part of efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition.
The suspects, identified as Isiaka Dare, and Taiwo Ayodabo, both residents of Tede, were apprehended at Budo Mosalasi, Saki, following an intelligence-led operation by operatives of the Command Monitoring Unit, Saki Operation Base.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the operation was carried out based on credible and actionable intelligence.
Items recovered from the suspects include 105 packets of pump-action cartridges concealed in four kegs, with each packet containing 25 cartridges, bringing the total to 2,625 cartridges.
Two unregistered motorcycles believed to have been used for transporting the ammunition were also recovered.
The police said the suspects have confessed and are assisting investigators in identifying other members of the alleged transnational network.
The Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, directed that the suspects be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
He commended the operatives for the successful operation and urged members of the public to continue providing timely information to support efforts to tackle illegal arms proliferation in the state.
