Oyo Police Confirm Attack on Operatives at Budo Masalasi Border, Death of Inspector Shaibu During Cross-fire
A police inspector has been killed in an ambush by suspected armed bandits at Budo Masalasi Border Post in Oyo State, authorities confirmed.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter insurgency reporter, the incident happened on Jan. 24 at about 1:30 p.m.
Source disclosed that ASP Entonu Shaibu and his patrol team encountered a group of 10 to 15 suspected bandits.
An exchange of gunfire ensued, but the numerical advantage of the attackers resulted in the death of Inspector Aliu Oluwole.
The assailants also seized his AK-47 rifle with 30 rounds of ammunition, bearing breach number 4516.
Efforts by police tactical teams, guided by credible intelligence, are ongoing to apprehend the bandits and recover the stolen firearm. According to sources, Investigation into the attack continues.
The development comes weeks after suspected bandits attacked the National Park Service office in Oloka Community, also in Oriire Local Government Area, killing five forest rangers.
Residents have suggested the attack may have been retaliation, as the state security forces had recently arrested suspected bandits and handed them over to the police.
While confirming the incident to newsmen via a text, the Oyo State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ayanlade Olayinka said indeed, there was an attack on Police operatives during which an Inspector, while courageously repelling the attack, paid the supreme price in the line of duty.
Immediately the information was received by the command, the Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, psc(+), ordered an immediate manhunt and a comprehensive investigation into the attack.
Preliminary findings indicate that some of the attackers sustained bullet injuries, and operatives are currently on their trail.
The Oyo State Police Command wishes to reassure members of the public that adequate security measures have been put in place to safeguard lives and property.
Residents are urged to remain calm, vigilant, and report any individuals with gunshot injuries, those seeking medical attention under suspicious circumstances, or persons exhibiting suspicious behavior to the nearest police station or security agency.
The Command remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators of this heinous act are apprehended and brought to justice.
