Governor Zulum Donates ₦50m to Family of Slain Army Officer

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has donated ₦50 million to the family of the late Lieutenant Colonel OC Okolo, who was killed during a Boko Haram attack in Mandaragirau, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State, on February 16, 2026.

The governor’s spokesman, Dauda Illiya, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday. He noted that Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting families of military personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Zulum also pledged to continue visiting families of officers and soldiers who have been killed or declared missing in ongoing military operations against insurgents.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Security, Brigadier General Abdullahi Sabi Ishaq (retd.), the governor presented the donation during a funeral service held on April 10, 2026, in Obinofia Ndiuno, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

According to the statement, the donation forms part of the Borno State Government’s ongoing efforts to support families of fallen heroes and personnel wounded in the fight against insurgency.

On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, Zulum extended his condolences to the bereaved family.

> “My heartfelt condolences to the immediate family, friends, and colleagues of Lt. Col. Okolo on his painful demise,” he said.
> “Lt. Col. OC Okolo was a gallant, dedicated, and committed officer whose contributions to the nation will not be forgotten.”

The governor also prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul and for strength and comfort for the family during this difficult time.

Responding on behalf of the family, Professor Stanley Okolo expressed deep appreciation for the governor’s gesture, describing it as a show of compassion and solidarity.

He noted that the family was particularly touched by the ₦50 million donation and the delegation from Maiduguri that attended the funeral despite the short notice.

Stanley also commended the Chief of Army Staff and the General Officer Commanding, 82 Division, for sending representatives to the service.

The funeral was attended by representatives of the Nigerian Army, including Brigadier General G.A. Suru, who represented the Chief of Army Staff, and Brigadier General I.P. Omoke, who represented the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, as well as members of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association and the host community.

Zulum had earlier made a similar intervention, donating ₦150 million to families of three military officers who died in separate attacks across the state.
